Keto diets are one of the most popular weight loss methods on the planet right now. Keto involves eating a low-carb, high-fat diet. It’s highly effective and loved by gym bunnies everywhere for its fast, sustainable results.
If you’re a fan of keto but also love chai latte, you might br wondering if chai latte is keto? The short answer is YES – it can be, but not always. Let us show you how!
What is chai latte?
Chai latte means ‘tea latte’. It’s short for ‘masala chai’ or ‘masala chai latte’ – which means mixed spice tea latte. Originally from India, chai latte is becoming super popular in the UK and US right now. Chai latte was actually created thousands of years ago by Ayurvedic medicine men and women, as a healing tonic. It was designed to be consumed with a little raw honey, so the traditional recipe is essentially keto. Modern chai latte blends are not always so saintly, though.
Can chai latte be keto?
Yes, and no. The good news is that chai latte CAN be keto, if it is made in the traditional way. The bad news is that most chai latte on the market isn’t keto. You only have to take one look at the nutritional content of a Starbucks chai latte to see that it contains an eye-watering amount of sugar. Defo not keto. Sadly most chai lattes available in big chain coffee shops and restaurants will be made this way. They’re usually a powdered mixture or syrup, topped up with milk.
How to find keto chai latte
Luckily finding keto chai latte is easy. All you need to do is follow this simple formula:
- Is it made with whole spices and loose tea, not syrup/powder? ✓
- Is it sugar free? ✓
- Is it all-natural? ✓
- Does it contain more than five spices? ✓
If your chai latte blend fulfils the above criteria, you’re good to go! You may need to ask at your local coffee shop when eating out if the chai latte is made in the traditional way, or with a powder. If it’s powdered, it’ll be over 80% sugar. Some powders and syrups are sugar free, but those tend to contain artificial sweeteners you may want to avoid.
